What is Music Therapy?

 

Music Therapy is well-established allied health profession similar to occupational and physical therapy.  It consists of using music therapeutically to address behavioral, social, psychological, communicative, physical, sensory-motor, and/or cognitive functioning.  Because music therapy is a powerful and non-threatening medium, unique outcomes are possible.  For individuals with diagnoses on the autism spectrum music therapy provides a unique variety of music experience in an intentional and developmentally appropriate manner of effect changes in behavior and facilitates development of skills.

 

  Benefits of Music Therapy for people with disabilities of all ages:

o       Flexibility and fitness with body movement

o       Confidence in expressing wants and needs

o       Relationships with family and the community

o       Music appreciation and lessons

o       Learning math, story telling and following directions and instructions

 

Support to the individual:

         o       Can support goals of individual education

               plan IEP of youth and individual services

               plan ISP of adults

o       Use music activities to facilitate changes that are non musical

o       Based on individual assessments, treatment plans evaluations by the music therapist, the individual and/or the parents

 

 

Supporting Individuals of all ages who have Autism

 

How music therapy works for individuals with Autism:

 

o       Responds positively to music

o       Shows heightened interest and response to music

o       Motivating and enjoyable

o       Promote relation, learning, and self expression

o       Addresses multiple developmentally issues simultaneously

o       Provides success-oriented opportunities for achievement and mastery

o       Improves the quality of life for whole family building less stress and increased coping skills, more independent and aware of self and others, and able to interact and communicate with others using non-verbal cues and other alternates
