  David Carey is Arizona Bridge to Independent Living Advocacy Specialist. As a disability advocate, David assistant and educates individuals as they work their way through the system in an effort to maintain and/or achieve independence. In addition, he can often be found at the Arizona State Legislature where he testifies and meets with legislators to discuss the importance of them supporting budget items, as well as bills that are critical to quality of life for people with individuals. He is also the coordinator of the Youth Action Council of Arizona (YAC-AZ). A newly formed youth group whose primary goal is systems change.

 

In addition to his work, David has also been an active member within his community. He served on the Board of Directors for the Arizona Spinal Cord Injury Association and is currently a member of The Centers for Habilitation Board of Directors. He is currently a Southwest Institute Steering Committee member and in the past he has served on both the Phoenix Mayor’s Commission on Disability Issues and the Light Rail Accessibility Advisory Committee along with volunteering for the Valley of the Sun United Way.

 

Over the past several years, David has received several honors for his dedication in addition too receiving the Gene Autry Courage Award in 1999. In 2001, he along with several other Tempe residents was invited by the City to represent Tempe at the All-American City Awards in Atlanta Georgia.
